Māori culture misappropriated in online gambling game

Endorphina Games from Czech Republic has an online slot machine
called ‘Maori’, but a Maori public
health organization says it’s blatant cultural
misappropriation. Hapai Te Hauora is concerned about the new online gambling site
that targets Maori. Te Okiwa McLean discovered
that Endorphina Games claims their game is a celebration of
cultural heritage from New Zealand. The Maori culture,
according to Maori health advocate, has been misappropriated once again. This online gambling game
called Maori, was launched on Boxing Day by
Endorphina Games in Czech Republic. Maori taonga such as whale bone, greenstone, tamoko, poi and taiaha
feature as icons in the game. And our very own haka ‘Ka Mate’
features when you gain free spins. Ngati Toa Rangatira
aren’t very happy. Te Karere tried to touch base
with Endorphina Games, but no luck. Ngati Toa Rangatira have not given
permission to use the haka. Hapai Te Hauora
and Ngati Toa Rangatira hope to touch base with Endorphina
Games to settle this issue. Te Okiwa McLean, Te Karere.
