Arrowhead Youth Games

Arrowhead Youth Games

Alright, so, we’re going to keep our eye on
the ball. Keep the bat high. And we’re going to take a nice, big swing. Yeah! Look at that! Good hit. We’re here at the Arrowhead Youth Games, 2017. We got an opportunity for … hey bud! We got an opportunity for a lot kids around
the area to come show their abilities throughout different activities. We have archery, batting, obstacle courses. We are serving 350 kindergarten through eighth
grade youth, all with a diagnosed disability from around the area. Students are volunteering at the stations
and they’re getting real life experience of adapting lesson plans to meet people of all
ability. We got one, two. We got one more! Aaand three. Good job Bailey. Yeah I do play football here on campus, going
in to my fourth year of football, I’ll go five years, but with football they give us
a lot of opportunities to volunteer and you’re humbled. You feel grateful for the opportunities that
you have first and foremost and then opportunities to help someone who maybe has had some difficulties
throughout their life find a passion. The kids look forward to this every year and
they have a great time. The volunteers come with high energy and they’re
learning all sorts of new things of how to adapt and make all activities inclusive. We here in Duluth are voted one of the best
outdoor recreation towns in America and we value recreation and we value it for everybody. We don’t want anyone excluded so what people
are doing here and UMD students specifically, is they’re providing lifelong learning. These are activities that they can do the
rest of their lives. When a person has a disability, the amount
of excuses goes up of why they maybe shouldn’t participate or don’t need to participate but
really all people need to be active and be involved in active living and we wouldn’t
be able to do that without the help of these UMD students. First and foremost I mean it’s a good opportunity
to give back. This is my third year and these kids every
year they come in and they love it and have a great time. It’s a good opportunity for them to explore
different activities that maybe they’re interested in and find an activity that they can do for
their whole life. Have you ever batted before? Yeah? Yeah, are you excited? Yeah. I’m excited! Make a kids day. Help them learn something new and then take
what they’ve learned and maybe use it for a lifetime.
